Kuala Lumpur, 2 July 2019 - Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Saga University of Japan are forging a research collaboration to develop the first Hybrid OTEC (H-OTEC) test rig off Port Dickson at the International Institute of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences (I-AQUAS) of UPM. This collaboration is very timely to expedite low carbon society and tackle the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Southeast Asia and specifically in Malaysia. This project was endorsed as a project funded by JICA, JST and matching funds from Ministry of Education (MoE) of Malaysia.


Today’s SATREPS Kick-off event will be launched in UTM Kuala Lumpur (UTMKL) campus, Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra, Kuala Lumpur by Professor Datuk Ir. Dr. Wahid Omar, the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The significant event will be made even more meaningful with the presence of Professor Dr. Noriyoshi Teramoto, Vice President of Saga University and members of Institute of Ocean Energy, Saga University (IOES). Our counterparts from IOES are Prof. Dr. Yasuyuki Ikegami and project manager Dr. Takeshi Yasunaga.


The five-year SATREPS Programme includes Research and Development of H-OTEC system and the multi-utilization of Deep Sea Water (DSW) in Malaysian eco-system so called “Malaysia model”. As the final project output, the Malaysian Model will be established. Currently, UTM is the only Malaysian university in Southeast Asia which has established an OTEC centre. The program will be led by Prof. Dato Ir. Dr. A Bakar Jaafar and the project manager will be Ts. Dr. Sathiabama T. Thirugnana comprising of UTM, UM, UPM, UKM and UMT researchers and representatives from other sectors have been set up to perform the project activities. These projects are fully funded by JICA, JST and MoE, Malaysia.
